Spread

Movie: Spread
I saw it on: August 17, 2009
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche, Margarita Levieva, Sebastian Stan, Rachel Blanchard
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: Ashton Kutcher is Nikki, a young gigolo.  Nikki owns no car and has no residence of his own. residence.  He relies on the generosity of others – primarily rich women – for survival.  As the movie opens, he is scouting for a new woman to provide for him.  He chooses Samantha (Anne Heche – looking very good) and she quickly succumbs to his charms.  She seems content to provide his room and board and gifts  in return for sex.  Things start going downhill for Nikki when he falls for Heather (Margarita Levieva) a diner waitress.  The rest of the movie deals with his growing infatuation with Heather and his deteriorating relationship with Samantha.

My two cents:  I went into the movie not expecting much – and that is what I got.  I kept waiting for the big moment when Nikki saw the error of his ways and realized what an ass he has always been – but it never really happens.  His light bulb never seems to get lit.  Without giving away the ending – it could be argues that the final scene demonstrates that Nikki has seen the light; but I contend it is the wrong light that he saw.

There is a fair amount of nudity – topless women and Ashton Kutcher’s bare butt.  Also a lot of graphic language.

A note on the genre.  A number of movie sites list the genre as “sex comedy” or “comedy”.  Maybe I missed something, but I very seldom saw anything that I would classify as funny.  I put “drama” for the genre simply because “stupid” did not seem to be a valid genre.
