Movie: A Woman in Berlin
I saw it on: September 6, 2009
Cast: Nina Hoss, Yevgeny Sidikhin, Irm Hermann, Jördis Triebel, Rosalie Thomass
Genre: War Memoir
Synopsis: Based on the memoirs of the main character, this movie takes place in Berlin during the last few months of World War II, when the Russians were just beginning their occupation of the city. The only way for many of the German women to survive where to submit to the brutal Russian soldiers. Refusing the advances of a soldier would likely lead to death. Nina Hoss plays a German woman trying to survive by becoming the “friend” of a German officer.
My two cents: This movie definitely makes you feel for the plight of the German civilians when the Russians moved in. It also emphasizes how both sides had both good and people. Just when you think that the Russinas were nothing but a bunch of brutal thugs, you find that the Russian Major is a really decent human being.
If you have any interest in World War II, a movie worth seeing.
